Paolo Maldini

Career

Maldini played 902 matches for Milan across a quarter of a century, at left-back and then centre-back, and is the standard against which positional defending is measured. His remark that having to make a tackle meant he had already made a mistake captures a style built on reading the game rather than winning duels.
